How to get the selected text in the actived window?

Hi all,
I can get the GDK_SELECTION_PRIMARY data with the help of gtk_selection_convert function, but the PRIMARY selection maybe not owned by the actived window. How can I get the selected text in the actived window or how to check whether the selection is owned by the actived window?
Need help.
