If I remember correctly, Bill was moving system suff around in the past - that's
why I strongly recommend him to instal any recent Linux distro.
Regarding gtk+ - I checked myseld from gtk+2.8.18 to gtk+2.10.3 - builds out of
the box, i.e. no intervention to change the stock 'configure' is necessary.
