Well, an outdated version of Gnome is not exactly what I want. What I want
is gnumeric, abiword, perhaps some other office applications. The latest
stable version of gnumeric is 1.0.12. The site says it needs gnome-libs
>=1.0.57, but not 2.0, and points to an ftp site where the highest
gnome-libs version is 1.4.2. If you have a reference to any newer version
that will do it, I will happily try it.

Of course I would prefer to stay with an actual GTK version.
