Yes, there is a performance hit, but since I'm only getting 4 bytes at a time.
And even if it has to contact the owner the delay is not really noticeable.

One thing that I've found to be a problem is the continual allocation and
deallocation.  Certain versions of certain OS's crash because of this after
running the application for long periods of time (days).  Using the
accelerators avoids this problem.
