Crystal clear error message: you don't have the X headers installed.
Install the package x_dev from your IRIX CDs.

Yes, I got no problems compiling whatever version of GTK+ on IRIX
6.[2-5]. The usual "./configure; gmake; gmake install" is enough to get
it compiled.
