Hi,
I just joined this list last night after failing to resolve this very
same problem following posts in a couple of newsgroups.
Basically, I wasn't aware that I had to un-install the rpms before
compiling new versions through tarballs.
So, I compiled glib-1.2.0 no problem. I compiled gtk+-1.2.0 no problem.
I then went on with the gnome 1.0 installation instructions and found
imlib's configure script looking for gtk -> 1.0.x which is didn't find.
It told me it was unable to find and compile the test programs, usually
because I would have moved the directory post-installation which I
hadn't. I checked with gtk-config and indeed it reported a version of
1.0.6? I definitely performed as root rpm -e --nodeps glib* and gtk*
which certainly seemed to remove everything. Compiling glib and gtk+
1.2.0 again seemed fine once again; and I confirmed it was going to
/usr/local/. I compiled imlib again and the same error came up and gtk-
config still reported 1.0.6 as being present.
Today I mv'ed the gtk dirs in /usr/local (including the gtk-config file)
so it couldn't see anything (I think I covered them all - what should I
be renaming?) and once again I recompiled, this time rm -rf gtk+-1.2.0
directory and started a fresh tarball. Again imlib reports GTK as
missing, although it continually reports that gtk+-1.1.x is present
(how?).
I've been rummaging through help posts and websites for info on this
(including the GTK FAQ) for around a week and I still have no answer.
It's almost as it there's a symlink somewhere setup by Red Hat telling
it what it has.
Please be gentle with me - I'm a newbie (i.e. give me the commands I
need exactly).
Help!
Many thanks in advance.
