Gtk-0.99.9, Perl/Gtk-0.1.15

I'm trying to build and try out the perl/Gtk module.  I can get it
all to compile after some minor fiddling, but all attempts to run test.pl
produce this error:

/usr/bin/perl: can't resolve symbol 'sv_derived_from'

I think the sv_ subroutines are perl internals - has somthing in there
changed and do I perhaps need to be using perl-5.004 or later?

environment:
	Gtk-0.99.9 compiled succesfully (testgtk runs, at least)
	Gtk-0.1.15 bindings for perl
	Perl-5.003
	Linux based on red hat 4.0; pentium cpu.


The compile-time fiddling was hacking the generated Makefile to include
the output of "gtk-config --cflags" in CFLAGS - it appeared that
Makefile.PL was trying to do this, but wasn't succesfull for some reason.
