smooth scrolling ???

Folks,
I was thinking whether there is a way to implement a smooth scrolling of
text, pictures, etc. (like that on the old VT terminals). Is there any way
it can be done with the existing or it would require rewriting the widgets
in Gtk?

I personally believe that smooth scrolling is quite a nice thing to have:
it helps to read on-the-fly.
