Compose key ignored

Hi.  I’m sorry if this was asked before, but it seems like I can’t
search the list right now.  I have a few customizations in
~/.XCompose, which works everywhere except in GTK+ apps.  After
googling around I found out I should try the XIM input method, and I
did.  Problem is, XIM IM under GTK seems to simply ignore my Compose
key (Multi_key, which I map to right Control through xmodmap).  Is
there a workaround? GTK+ 2.8.20-5 here, debian sid, en_US.UTF-8.

Also, out of curiosity, are there plans for GTK to read ~/.XCompose or
at least to provide some way of customizing compose combinations?
