file chooser too hermetic

Hi,

I have reported new feature request to the bugzilla (as suggested in 
faq)
but Owen asks me for concrete API. Can we discuss it here?

The idea is to add new fields to the file-item list at user demand,
like new column for thumbnails. What do you like better - general 
function
for arbitrary modifications or specific, eg thumbnail dedicated?
What can I assume about the embeded file-list widget?
Will it be a TreeView in further versions?
Will be that widget columned?
