Hey
I had the same problems in the beginning. Specifically with autoconf
and automake, just like you said. But I somehow got through. Firsly,
Install the autoconf and automake packages. Now for finding info on them.
[1] Checkout http://developer.gnome.org/ for autoconf and automake docs in
relation to be used in GTK+/GNOME programs.
[2] Checkout the info pages. They might seem confusing at first, but if
you pay attention, you'll get through. I think, you'll be better off
skipping the introduction, and go straight to the tutorial type docs,
which explain it with an example.
[3] The GNU website maybe of some help too. Don't know really.
[4] Lastly, there is no better way to learn, but from other programs'
sources.
[5] Come on irc.gimp.org #gnome #gtk. Guys (including me) may help you
there. (probably your best option)
PEACE
Archit Baweja
P.S. I have the gnome-hello tarball. Tell me and I'll mail it to you.
