Yes, linking to stuff on www.freedesktop.org is painful, since the links
tend to break... hicolor is not a gnome theme though, it is a set of
basic icons needed for icon theme support, and is hosted on
freedesktop.org.
I went ahead and downloaded hicolor-icon-theme, version 0.5 (after
wading through several layers of the freedesktop wiki to find it),
but when I stalled this package in the same place as gtk2 (namely
/opt/gtk2), it did not remove the warning quoted above.
You probably need to point gtk at the icons by including
opt/gtk2/share in XDG_DATA_DIRS.
