determining character width (fitting text)

I'm trying to fit text inside a label so that it's at its maximum size.

I wrote some very very very disturbing, perverted, bad code to determine 
the font size that's needed for the text to fit, but there has got to be 
a better way. (Plus the docs for one of the functions that I'm using 
says that the return is only approximate ... )
