gtk+-2.2.0 installation problem

I am trying
toinstall GTK+-2.2.0 in my linux system where i am having GTK1.2.Here the
packages what i have are [atk-1.2.0.tar,glib-2.2.0.tar,gtk+-2.2.0.tar,pango-1.2.0.tar,pkgconfig-0.15.0.tar]
The above mentionad
packages are there with me.
step by step
....
1) First i untared
pkgconfig in home/user1 where i am having all the tar files,Then i entered into
the directory where i have to do ./configure & make & make check &
make install....After this i left from this directory..
2) I untared
GTK+-2.2.0 in home/user1 in the same place where i untared pkg-config here also
i did the same first ./configure after this i am getting a problem here it is
not recognising the pkg-config....
May i know what my
problem is ...
What is
the actual procedure to install...If i am wrong in
installing..
Kindly solve this
problem for me...
