If you really want to use 2.2.1, you'd be best to install it so as to
overwrite the 2.0.6 that's on your system.  You'll be out of sync with
your rpm database, but everything should work.

As Owen Taylor suggested, configure glib and gtk with --prefix=/usr
--sysconfdir=/etc.

It's quite easy to have gtk 1.2 and gtk 2.0 "peacefully coexist" on
your system, but you'd really have to know what you're doing to have
parallel installations of 2.0.6 and 2.2.1.  And there's no reason to
do so, because 2.2.1 is binary compatible with 2.0.6.
