Advice on Drawing Block Diagrams (with Gnome Canvas)

Hi List.
I am developing an application to generate Schematic Block Diagram (or Loop Diagram), which involves multiple 
interconnections between blocks. There can be any number of blocks ranging from 1 to 100, depending on the 
Loop. Each block may have multiple parameters connected to parameters on different blocks. The scheme could 
be very complicated for some Loops.

I would appreciate if someone can advice me a best way forward to develop this kind of application. The key 
is interconnecting parameters as so many lines will be drawn between blocks.

Is Gnome Canvas a good choice?
Any pointer to such application example on web will also be highly appreciated.

I would also like to print this drawing. Is Gnome Print a solution?
