I tried the same test using the nv driver from XFree86. Unfortunately, 
the results are now so dramatic that one significant figure suffices:

Time in seconds to run test case:

driver     double buffering
             yes        no
nvidia         6         1
nv            40         1

It's very hard to make sense of this.
