problem to make a program to convert any image file into .xpm file

hi,


I want a make a program which convert any image file into an .xpm file. please give me some idea to develop 
this progem, and how will i get color pixel value. i am trying gdk_image_get_pixel to get the pixel value, 
but it vary from machine to machine.
please give some idea and algorithm to solve the problem.
