application icons

In my gtk application I'd like to add launchers for applications,
and I'd like to put an icon belonging to the application on the 
launcher button. Is it possible to find out the icon that belongs
to an application using just gtk, or should I use the gnome libraries
for this? (I know how this can be done using gnome.)
