Hmm, the gdk and gdk_pixbuf libraries are at 1.3 instead of 2.0, which would
suggest they are somewhat old (1.3 being the development series leading to 2.0).
Not sure what this means though.

Ari is right, I forgot that you don't need -L/usr/lib, because it's the default
"trusted" location for libraries.

Has running ldconfig improved the situation?

I would remove the gtk2 packages, re-install the gtk+1.2 packages, and compile
gtk+2 from source yourself, installing it in a different location (e.g. 
/opt/gtk2). That way you can use both without conflict.
