Hi - I've just added myself to this list and was wondering how informal it is. I've just started getting back into programming in C and I've got most of the base concepts down. I'd like to be able to develop X-windows applications and was wondering whether gtk is the right API to be using if I want to do basic X-windows development, and whether there is anything I should know about how gtk differs from any other X-windows API?
Well, if you're into SM you could try programming raw Xlib or Xt/Athena :-) If you're really into C++ you could try Qt. (My coat? It's the asbestos-covered full-length one, thanks). I have found that delving into the source is occasionally very usefull for my own understanding, so it's best to keep it around. Tools like glade (www.glade.org) are very helpfull in creating gtk+ apps.
Frankly, I'm going to probably require a little bit of hand-holding,
I'd advise you to start with gtk+ 2.0. A lot of people here are busy converting their apps from 1.2 to 2.0. Start now, so you don't have to switch later. Study the gtk-demo app that comes with gtk 2.0. It contains good pointers on how to do things in 2.0.
although I understand concepts such as event-driven programming and such. Is this the right place to ask for help, once I move my way through the tutorial on gtk.org?
Yep. BTW, would you mind turning off the HTML? With kind regards, Roland -- R.F. Smith /"\ ASCII Ribbon Campaign r s m i t h @ x s 4 a l l . n l \ / No HTML/RTF in email http://www.xs4all.nl/~rsmith/ X No Word docs in email / \ Respect for open standards
