handle box

hi all

I am writing a small application where i have a handle box.
somewhere in mi code e need to hide and show that handle box by clicking
at a menu check item. i got to some code where e check for the state of
the check menu item and a make a gtk_widget_show(handle) or
gtk_widget_hide(handle) according to the state i get. Mi problem is that
the main window those  not respond any more after this!
can any one help me??
