Clearing the list in a combo widget

Hi all,
        I got one question. How can I clear the list of a GtkCOmbo widget.
Would something like the following line work or should I do more.

gtk_list_clear_items(GTK_LIST(GTK_COMBO(combo)->list),0,-1);

I ask this because the docs say that the list member must be treated read-only.
