Hal,
I did try it and here is what I got back:
sudo port upgrade outdated
Error: No ports matched the given expression
I guess this is because I have not installed anything using macports yet so
there was nothing to upgrade. So this doesn't seem to fix the issue of gnumeric
dependency not going forward with the install. Any other suggestions? It's
not clear to me if it is a goffice problem or a gnumeric problem with how
dependencies are resolved.
Anyone else having this same issue on Mac?

This is more a macports question than a gnumeric one butI think you
might have missed a step there. The one that the port program tells you
about in the scroll you pasted below... :-)
sudo port selfupdate
sudo port upgrade outdated
sudo port install gnumeric.
Worked for me.
All the best
Hal

After running macports with commands:

I get a glib2 failed due to upgrade to goffice failed (see log below).
Are there any known work-arounds for this situation to get gnumeric to
install on a macbook pro?

macbook-pro:~home sudo port selfupdate

The ports tree has been updated. To upgrade your installed ports, you
should run
port upgrade outdated
macbook-pro:~ home sudo port install gnumeric
---> Computing dependencies for glib2
---> Configuring glib2
Error: Target org.macports.configure returned: autoconf failure: shell
command failed (see log for details)
Log for glib2 is at:

ts.org_release_ports_devel_glib2/main.log Error: Unable to upgrade port:
