I should perhaps add: I have gkrellm running all the time, so I
could see that the extreme latency was specific to gnumeric, not a
system-wide problem. If I just let gnumeric sit there between
edits, and tried doing things in firefox or emacs or in an xterm,
the system was behaving normally with minimal latency and CPU
usage.
