It's the kind of question that if you have to ask, you probably shouldn't
be doing it, :-)  It is not simple and there are more traps than you might
want.

But to answer the question, first see http://developer.gnome.org/tools/cvs.html
Then do something like this...

./autogen.sh [configure options go here]
make
make install
