this is not part of the gnumeric code base but a part of gnomeprint.
Which version of gnomeprint are you using anyways? (Just for the record,
this works fine for me.)

The print dialog would be much less error-prone if every option
in that dialog could have a default value taken from a .conf file
in either the user's home directory or from the directory holding 
the file to be printed (or both).

Under cups the gnomeprint library essentially tries to do that.
