also, could that gnumeric-specific solution for graphs be made generic
so that other apps can use it? I wonder because I am planning to add
graphic widgets to libgnomedb (see
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=69206), and was planning to
use guppi, as Gnumeric does (or did).
 
Could I add another vote for a generic graphs api?

I've been using the python chaco package for plotting:

http://www.scipy.org/

It doesn't do all the types of graph you'd like, but what it does do it
does very nicely.
