How does that improve things ?   If we posit an XL style structure of

    /-------------------------------------\
    |     Condition                       |
    |  Sample         <launch fmt dialog> |
    \-------------------------------------/

Then we're not pressed for space and I don't see any other
advantages to merging the elements.  What am I missing ?
