It was memory corruption due to a transposed col vs row in an array
allocation.  valgrind highlighted it fairly quickly, and morten had
already patched it.

Note : to get things to build under sid I needed to use a bit of
blunt trauma to the head of autogen.sh to force it to use modern
auto* tools. It warn't pretty but at least I got a build.
