As promised I took a look at gnumeric chart format.
Here is what I found:
1. Gnumeric uses "Guppi" http://www.gnome.org/guppi to do its graphing
2. Guppi is not considered fully featured (I don't think thats a real
downside)
3. to create a graph you need approximately the latest gnumeric (I have
1.04) and the latest version of guppi (0.40+) You select cells and pick
the little graph button at the top
4. Gnumeric cannot import Excel graphs
5. I can't get Graphs/charts to work on my box. It goes through the
wizard then returns with nothing.
Can someone else take a jab at it and see if they can get it to work.
If they have a similar experience then I'd suggest eliminating this
format from the list of those to try.

PS - I just noticed there are more recent versions of gnumeric available
I'll try those as well.
PPS - Gnumeric folks: The Krysalis project (www.krysalis.org) has a SVG
charting project for which they are reconsidering the file format. It's
been suggested they piggyback on an existing format

I don't know anything about Gumeric but Sun just announced that Version
6 of StarOffice (a full office suite) will be released on May 21st. The
native file format is "an open XML format", I have no idea what "open"
means as I have not had the time to look into it yet. The package
includes a charting application. If you are thinking of using
another format for the data maybe you should look into this as well.
I believe the URL is http://www.staroffice.com but I'm not online at
present so forgive me if this is wrong and I forget to check before
sending my mail when I do go online.
