HOOrahH!
Jody's solution does in fact work, and I've gained a bit more knowledge in
Gnu/Linux/Gnome. Of course, now I've got a failed dependancy on
gnome-print. Aargh!
Thanks so much for everyone's time.

I've built all from source and not used any .rpm or other binary installer.
You build gnome-libs from source?
Most, yes, in an effort to do things the hard way first. I learn more that
way, as evidenced by the trouble I've had with gnumeric. This is harder
now, but makes things easier later. Just eccentric, I guess.
Also, if usr/local wasn't in the gnome-path, would I be able to run the
libole2-config? Would it give the expected responses?
yes.
Your shell has a 'PATH' variable which locates programs, it almost
certinaly includes /usr/bin and /usr/local/bin. Hence
libole2-config works.
The command 'gnome-config' has a 'GNOME_PATH' variable which is not
defined by default. Hence it only looks in the default location,
probably /usr/lib.
I tried the steps you suggest below and get:
bash: setenv: command not found
What am I missing?
Sorry, setenv assumes a different type of shell.
GNOME_PATH=/usr/local
export GNOME_PATH
and try again.
