That sounds like a problem I just had!!

I fixed it by reinstalling libxml1 (leaving libxml2 alone
but removing /usr/include/libxml and /usr/include/gnome-xml *before*
recompiling and installing libxml1).

Then reconfigure and recompile gnumeric.
