My guess is that something is preventing shared libraries from being
built.

Could you please do your "./configure ..." in a completely fresh tree
and send us the output?  Of special interest is anything having to do
with libtool and libraries.  (Fresh tree: untar into a new directory
or perhaps "make distclean".)
