Gnumeric doesn't obey X conventions for cut, copy and paste.

If you are running Gnumeric 1.0.x then you have no hope of getting it to
interoperate properly with other software. If you are running 1.1.x
then a partial fix has been applied, you should be able to Copy but 
you probably won't be able to Paste.
