Thanks, that worked.

For future reference for anyone who has the same problem all I had to do was 
make sure the lines:
noload => chan_alsa.so
noload => chan_oss.so
are present in /etc/asterisk/modules.conf and uncommented (remember ; is a 
comment in Asterisk .conf files).
