so, if it's a problem with the library, then it's almost certainly the
same problem that's affecting gnomemeeting. if it's a bug in arecord then
it's probably just coincidence and nothing to do with the gnomemeeting
problem?

i'll have a poke around and see what i can work out. i'll try installing a
different version of the alsa libs.
