Re: [GnomeMeeting-list] RAM consumption

Hi,
Been there, and installed new linux distro on old (4 years) machines.

The size of the openh323/pwlib libraries have increased over the years -
new code has been added to provide new functionality. The new code has
led to an increase in the size of the executable. However, the factor
which has the biggest influence on the size of the execuatable is gcc.

When gcc changed between 2.95.X and 2.96.Y
(sorry, cannot remember the values of X & Y)
Prior to the change,
you could compile openh323 from source on a machine with 64mb ram.

a small executable + openh323 libs compiled as a binary was 1 mb in size.

Following the change,
you required 256mb of memory to compile openh323

the executable became multiple megabytes in size.

A second significant change over the years has been the size of the
gnome/kde environments. My experience with old machines and new linux
distros is that it can be made to work, if

1)I run in console only mode
   (run level 3, no X)

or

2)I run a minimal window manager such as twm

Derek.
