Well, if your device is not automatically detected, it will not accept
to use it (it is a recquirement of pwlib).
Basically, it opens the mixers and look if they work.
Then adds the corresponding /dev/dsp.

Once it has detected the mixers, it tries to open the other soundcards
that were not detected.

Now you have to try to know why your /dev/dsp fails to open. Have you
tried to run GnomeMeeting as root ? Does it work as root ?
