OK, what about this.

The interface stays the same (prefs and druid). The user selects an
audio plugin (but they don't know that they are in fact choosing the
audio "input" plugin). If the selected input plugin can also be used for
output, everything (interface-wize) stays the same and the same plugin
is used for output. If the plugin does not support output, though, an
extra pulldown is unhidden and the user can then select their output
audio plugin.

Which also essentially means, that if the user does not have the DVaudio
plugin installed, they will not see any difference in the interface.
