I'd say capplets are pretty easy to write and integrate. After all, they
are just regular (if usually smallish) apps. The problem with the
current system is that it doesn't scale, though. Add 10 custom
preferences panels, and you need Google maps to find the setting you
need.

I'm not sure that "better search" and "tagging" are sufficient answers
to this problem but since I don't have any of my own they are probably
better than nothing.
