These are very important problems. And many people have expressed
concern over the UI churn that such radical change has.
It would be nice if there was a complete HIG review and that the style
of the shell fitted with the overall style of UI.

Yes, indeed. It's not the principle that's the problem. At the moment I
think it is the implementation (with libslab) that is the problem.
Ideally such a 'shell' would have a UI that is more closely tied to the
current GNOME look and feel and theming. Also the performance of the
shell is pretty rough.
I know this is late in the cycle but please revert to menus by default.
