Ok - data point for the archives.
Running
# update-mime-database /usr/share/mime
and restarting nautilus seems to have sorted things out. I know what triggered the problem (installing an RPM) but I don't know enough about the new mime handling to understand *why* that caused this problem...

The symptom is that opening the "Computer" in nautilus results in all the .drive and .desktop's being shown.
$ rpm -q nautilus gnome-vfs gnome-vfs2 shared-mime-info gnome-mime-data
nautilus-2.6.0-4
gnome-vfs-1.0.5-18
gnome-vfs2-2.6.0-8
shared-mime-info-0.14-1
gnome-mime-data-2.4.1-4
$ rpm -V nautilus gnome-vfs gnome-vfs2 shared-mime-info gnome-mime-data

Any suggestions?
