Absolutely not just tastes. See the 8 points to support abstract wallz.
Usability, customizable colors (when users will change their gtk theme
in the future), originality, space, resizable/scalable, long-term usage
(months/years), and gnome HIG.
A comparison of the two wallz with various colors (see how tango colors
look better with the tango blue of the abstact wallpaper):

Obviusly an abstract wallpaper could go green if you want, and the users
could still customize it if they prefer the blue :)
I'm ready to bet with that direction (also after seeing the success of
the Apple aqua wallpaper), and I will push new nature wallpapers when we
will have something really good on our hands. With a wallpaper that
convince us _totally_, not just some of them. Ready for 2.22 baby? :)
Now the only one that looks fine with clearlooks and other themes is
"GreenMeadow", the big leaf is nice but its gradients and details makes
it less adaptable chamging wallpapers
