Having thought about what I originally said, I was only thinking of the
stock icons that are displayed through GTK+. It would be possible to
write an engine that displayed these in a different way (i.e. lower the
contrast), but it wouldn't be possible to affect how Nautilus displays
icons.
I think the best thing to do here is to write a script to convert the
current gnome-icon-theme to a low contrast version. I had a look at the
current low contrast icon theme, and it is an amazing mismatch of old
and obscure icons, not to mention the numerous missing icons as well. I
assume that a relatively simple shell script using ImageMagick could
convert most of the gnome-icon-theme to a low contrast version. Does
anyone know what the steps are in creating a low contrast version of an
icon (including precise parameters)?
