Hi last year we had this GSoc project for GStreamer
http://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/wiki/MediaServices
One of the gstreamer people started a new attempt recently
http://blogs.gnome.org/uraeus/2009/03/23/learning-to-code/

Would be good to join efforts here.
