Same identical problem here. I made the same identical attempts,
working on Debian Wheeze as well.
I ended up using Ubuntu Raring with this ppa:
https://launchpad.net/~gnome3-team/+archive/gnome3 to port my extension
to 3.8. Hope it works for you too.

Hi all,
I want to update my extension [1] to work with 3.8, but I'm having a
hard time.
First I tried downloading the 3.7.92 iso from [2]. I couldn't run it
on boxes (maybe because my pc's cpu doesn't support hardware
virtualization) neither on virtualbox (it started, but had a problem
and asked me to logout when in the shell).
I also tried to build it on jhbuild, but lots of dependencies fail to
build. Maybe it's because I'm on Debian Wheezy and it's frozen since
the half of last year, leaving me with a lot of outdated packages.
Is there an alternative way for testing it? Last time I tested it on
an ubuntu image, because it had gnome 3.6 there and it booted on
virtualbox, but that's not an option anymore since the next ubuntu
release will stick to 3.6.

Thanks in advance,
