Yes, having this as an option sounds good to me, default leave it as is but allow users to be able to move it to the right if they want through gnome tweak tool.

I also don't like the hotspot in the upper left (I'm always hitting it when switching Chrome tabs, and I also moved my close/min/max to the left).  If I had a choice, I'd move it to the bottom-left.  I tried using this extension to move it to the top-right:

... but it doesn't quite work in Linux Mint 12, so I deactivated it.
