Every application can add custom menu items there (it's just little used
yet). See http://live.gnome.org/GnomeShell/Design/Whiteboards/AppMenu

That's actually pretty nice, I wasn't aware of it. Still, the screenshot you linked to seems to duplicate the main items in the menubar, doesn't it? Why not merge the two, and avoid having to different places to find the same functions?
