Exactly your proposed key combination should actually work - I'm using it

Yes it works! I'm wondering why I did not check it first..

Hi,

I upgraded gnome-shell and found Ctrl-Alt-<left,right> are now gone.
The automatic workspace is fantastic, I like it. But I'm on laptop
with only touchpad so switching workspace is a bit slower for me. Is
there a plan to put keyboard support back some time?

On the workspace switching, I think C-A-<up,down> are good ones,
unless you intend to keep the combinations for something else. Then
C-<arrow> in overview mode for selecting window? Shortcuts for
resizing window to one half of the screen would also be nice.

On a related note, I'm very bugged by how my muscle memory always goes for left and right when I'm required to use up and down instead. Could there be an alternative method of switching workspaces, for example, flicking the mouse up while clicking on the desktop (like a gesture), or CTRL+ALT+PG[UP/DOWN]? I could get used to the up/down keys in time, but a gesture of some kind would be very helpful (and potentially useful to people with touch-screens)
